Helping Our Fellow Man - Hurricane Harvey Victims

Shameful! That's how the Insurance Lobbyists are treating the survivors of Hurricane Harvey.

We urge all Texas homeowners to file at least an initial claim (placing their insurance company on notice) of property damage caused by this massive natural disaster. Why the rush? Because a new insurance law will go into effect tomorrow - September 1st, 2017.

The Texas law, House Bill 1774 reduces the penalty (interest damages) insurance companies are required to pay when insurance companies underpay or refuse to pay property damage claims from natural disasters. Currently, if insurance companies intentionally delay or deny claims and then are later ordered to pay, the interest penalty is 18%. The new Texas law reduces insurance companies bad conduct punishment to 10% on the delayed or denied payments.

We urge our colleagues in Texas to change this bad consumer protection bill. The penalty only applies when insurance companies are "convicted" of doing wrong.

Our Community Association Network ("CAN"), along with CAN's Advisory Board, regional coalition partners and national membership, representing more than 7 million Florida homeowners - work very hard to ensure your families are not victimized twice - 1st by a natural disaster and then by insurance companies.

As Floridians, we know what it's like to live through the aftermath of a hurricane. We will NOT let insurance lobbyists take advantage of Hurricane Harvey's devastation.

If you or anyone you know has been affected by Hurricane Harvey, please encourage them to email their claim to their insurance company NOW and take as many pictures as possible. Seek experienced legal counsel who is looking out for YOUR rights during the claim process. Do research and don't take the insurance company's offer at face value. Remember, insurance companies don't have your best interests in mind.
