We need your help immediately! Please contact Governor Rick Scott's office and respectfully urge him to veto HB 653 because it contains many of the same anti-Association provisions we've been working so hard to keep out of legislation. While we support the original fire-sprinkler language and intent of HB 653, the bill was amended late in the 2017 Legislative Session to include many of the anti-Association and anti-homeowner provisions that are also contained in HB 1237.
This bill contains the same BAD provisions we outlined in our prior alerts including the following:
(1)Website requirements - This is unnecessary as it will increase costs to homeowners and open further exposure to legal liability;
(2) Prohibiting an Association from hiring the same attorney that represents the condominium's management company. This wording has the potential to increase insurance premiums and increase costs for homeowners;
(3) Can't use a debit card for any Association expense - This is unnecessary, particularly when there are existing laws against such fraud and abuse. It will impede the day-to-day activities of an Association and encourage payments with cash, which is untraceable and inhibits appropriate oversight and accountability.
Please email Ms. Lee Moore with Governor Scott's office at firstname.lastname@example.org and advise her that you would like Governor Scott to Veto HB 653. You can also call her at (850) 717-9509 and tell her why increased costs and government regulations will hurt your community and its homeowners. Don't delay! Governor Scott needs to know your concerns NOW before it's too late.
